One of my favorite (and least favorite at times) parts of having a home — or apartment, or condo, or studio, or whatever you call home — there’s always the opportunity to update or do renovations to make it better. Taste and style develop and form over time. We did two bathroom updates, so I’ve taken a break to organize one of my favorite spots in the kitchen: the spice rack. Or in our case, I’m talking about spice drawer organization. If you want a super easy kitchen update you can make over a weekend on a budget, update your spice rack to a spice drawer!
Spices should be stored away from your stove / oven. Heat weakens the flavor. Spices ideally should be stored in a cool, dark spot – potentially in a drawer further away or in a pantry.
UPDATING YOUR SPICE DRAWER + ORGANIZATION
I wish I took a photo of the mess we had beforehand, but I feel like you can imagine. One of the biggest things I feel that unifies a spice drawer and makes it feel organized and easy to grab what you need is to have matching jars and labels on everything.
It may seem like it’s a bit extra and only meant for Pinterest kitchens — but since we’ve updated our spice drawer, I’ve found it’s SO much easier to find spices because the spice drawer is scannable. Yes, I want things to look nice because I find it really calming, but ultimately I need it to function and make my life easier if I’m going to make an update.
One of the things I love (besides everything) about the spice jars is that they’re so easy to use and refill. The labels fit perfectly, and you can easily peel them off if you’re not happy about your first placement. But they don’t move after that! We’ve stored our extras in a basket so as we buy more spices, it’s easy to add the label to the jar.
Pro Tip: Instead of buying your spices in containers at the store and causing more waste, buy it wholesale. We go to a local spice and tea shop and have it measured into our jars!
